UFC75 Champion Vs. Champion

UFC75 is literally around the corner, you can smell the blood and the intensity of the event. Take a big sniff, it’s almost here. This is a quick throwdown of some predictions for the event:

  • Quinton Jackson Vs. Dan Henderson
I’m not going to give this much thought. Last night I watched an interview with Dangerous Dan on the fight network. I am convinced he isn’t as stupid as I thought he was, I actually respect him a lot more and he has the credentials to win this fight. HE can KO Rampage after wearing him down with his wrestling skill. Rampage won’t be slamming Henderson and his wrestling isn’t anywhere nearly as good as Henderson’s and he won’t be knocking him out. Henderson, TKO from the mount bitch!
  • Matt Hamill Vs. Michael Bisping
I think Bisping is the future of MMA in the UFC. Hamill’s a great wrestler and I have a lot of respect for where he has come from and the challenges he has overcome. I have a lot of respect for him but respect isn’t going to stop Bisping from kicking the crap out of him.
  • Mirko Cro Cop Vs. Cheick Kongo
This is a big fight but Cro Cop’s got a cage to train in now and he knows what it’s like to take some GnP punishment so he’s more prepped for this fight that the fight he had against Gonzaga. Congo is an experienced fighter but Cro Cop isn’t shy of fighting experience and has the deadliest KO kick potential on the planet. Cro Cop win by KO - left kick!
  • Marcus Davis Vs. Paul Taylor
Marcus Davis will dance around Taylor and slap him silly, even with his stupid nicknames.
  • Houston Alexander Vs. Alessio Sakara
Alexander Houston KTFO of Jeith Jardine, talk about complacency. Alexander is strong and can hit home as can Sakara. I’m going with Alexander on this one.
  • Gleison Tibau Vs. Terry Etim *
I gotta go with Terry Etim but thats personal choice because he’s a scouser (from Liverpool, England) and that’s my peoples yo. He has his work cut out with Tibau, who’s Jiu Jitsu is great and so is his record. This fight should air if the others don’t all go to decisions - it’s going to be a good fight, you have to see it. Etim going to be BIG in the UFC.
  • Tomasz Drwal Vs. Thiago Silva *
Drwal has fought and beaten a lot of Polish fighters but is unknown to me. Silva on the other hand can stand up and punch a brick wall and win.
  • Naoyuki Kotani Vs. Dennis Siver *
Kotani for sure, 100% by submission.
  • Anthony Torres Vs. Jess Liaudin *
    Liaudin will knock him out

* Fight may not air.

UFC75 - Pride in the UFC

quinton_jackson_henderson200.jpgWhile I don’t want to over-exaggerate or speak completely in hyperbole, UFC75 is going to be the FREAKING GREATEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED. EVER.

After years of waiting on the Fertitta brothers to bring us a true Pride Fighting – UFC merger, here it is laid out before us in spectacular fashion.

UFC75 features the first-ever MMA unification bout, when Quintin Rampage Jackson defends his UFC Light heavyweight Title against Pride Fighting’s Champion Dan Hollywood Henderson. While fighting enthusiasts will note that Jackson is by-and-large a Pride fighter new to the UFC (why you gotta be a dick like that?), when he knocked out Chuck Liddell like he had stolen his momma’s purse he became a fan-favorite and one of Dana White’s poster-boys.

Henderson has taken the long road back to the U.S. and is a far cry from the fighter who competed in UFC17. That said, the competition is a far cry from the previous generation of fighters – Quintin Jackson ain’t no Carlos Newton, that’s for sure. Those who doubt his credentials though should be forced to watch his defeat of Wanderlei Silva to understand what a rounded fighter he is. Considering that he is known for his clinch and grappling, yet defeated the striker Silva on his feet should tell you something. If this match had happened in the UFC, and Silva was Rich Franklin, Henderson would already be co-hosting Best Damn Sports Show Period and appearing in Sports Illustrated.

While still operating in Japan, Pride fighting has officially taken a back-seat to its American brother. One need only look at the second fight on the card to see why. Showcased as the Ultimate Fighter 3 finale that should have been, Michael Bisping and Matt Hamill are set to clash in what should be a fierce grudge match. There’s a tremendous amount of hype about this fight, as Hamill is the superior athlete, but Bisping has quickly become a crowd favorite – especially in his hometown U.K.

Dana White’s ability to generate story lines and publicity is what created the monster that is the current UFC and conversely, doomed Pride fighting. Pride never had an Ultimate Fighter. Pride wasn’t able to make the fighters more so characters in a story, thereby drawing in your average fan (and chicks. Chicks dig that shit.) This is why Chuck Liddell gets cheers everywhere he goes. This is why Tito Ortiz is more a brand than a fighter anymore.

The match between Cheick Kongo and Mirko Cro Cop only further illustrates this divide. Cro Cop was known to MMA fans as a complete and utter juggernaut in Pride fighting. With the most brutal body kicks in the biz and a stone-cold demeanor, he seemed to be an easy transition to UFC fans. That was before Gabriel Gonzaga kicked him in the head like it was a gang initiation and knocked him out cold. If Cro Cop can regain momentum against the up-and-coming striker Kongo he’ll get his chance to be in the top echelon of fighters again. If he falls, Kongo moves up the ladder, while Cro Cop’s career will take a serious detour. One thing is for sure however, while fighters come and go, the UFC’s usurpation of Pride fighting will be a constant.

UFC75 FREE!

Criticize the UFC all you want.

Hack on their P.R. tactics, their fighter salaries or their dealings with competitors, they sure know how to appease the salivating mixed martial arts fan.

For the third time the UFC will be broadcasting a UFC event, albeit on tape delay, for free on Spike TV.

I don’t mind this one bit.

Wasting Away - Cro Cop in the UFC

Cro Cop is just waiting…When I first heard Cro Cop was coming to the UFC, I got wetter than a 16 year old girl in the backseat of an IROC in the 80’s (Yes, THAT wet).

After hearing that his first opponent would be the little known Eddie Sanchez, I figured the UFC brass had decided it would be best to “feed” Cro Cop a “can” in his Octagon debut. After that uneventful encounter, I was further disappointed to find out that matchmaker Joe Silva had scheduled CC to face Gabe Gonzaga, another lesser known competitor who on paper, appeared to be no match for the Croatian. As everyone now knows “Napao” proved to be more than a worthy contender showing excellent top control, dominating the fight and eventually knocking out Filipovic with CC’s own trademark head kick.

However, now with a bout between Cro Cop and French kick boxer Cheick Kongo being rumored for UFC75, it’s left me feeling that the UFC could be utilizing the former PRIDE and K-1 star a little more effectively.

It’s not that I don’t think these opponents are worthy. I was just looking forward to some fantasy match ups like CC vs. Arlovski, CC vs. Couture or even CC vs. the much hated Tim Sylvia. I mean, has anyone been dreaming about a potential meeting between Mirko and Carmelo Marrero? No? Didn’t think so…

So come on UFC, realize what a talent you have on your hands. Sure, he might have the occasional shocking loss (See: Kevin Randleman) and maybe he is lacking a little in the PR department (See: any press conference). And yes, his entrance music is Duran Duran, but the man is a walking highlight reel. Mirko himself has said he’s not sure how many fights he has left in him and was contemplating retirement after the PRIDE 2006 GP. I just hope we get to see him in at least one marquee UFC match before he hangs up the gloves.
