UFC74 Fight Recap

randy2.jpgTwo big upsets last night as Patrick Cote TKO’d Kendall Grove and the old man Randy Couture successfully defended his title with a dominant TKO victory over Gabriel Gonzaga.

Patrick Cote vs Kendall Grove

The televised card started off with a bang as the underdog Cote punched his way to a win over budding UFC superstar Kendall Grove. Cote went into this fight as a the superior striker but for some reason Grove hung upstairs with him…big mistake…Cote landed a ton of bombs and finished him with a right hook behind Kendall’s ear…first round TKO Patrick Cote.

Result: Patrick Cote 1st round TKO

Next up, Joe “Daddy” Stevenson vs Kurt Pelligrino

Stevenson is widely considered one of the top contenders in the lightweight division, some would even say he should have already had a title shot. Kurt Pellegrino was 16-2 and on a two fight UFC winning streak. Stevenson maybe gave up a round or two in a solid unanimous decision victory.

Result: Joe “daddy” Stevenson Unianimous Decision

Roger Huerta vs Alberto Crane

Huerta is a bona-fide superstar, Crane is unknown but undefeated in MMA. That didn’t matter this night though as Huerta dominated the action after a close fisrt round. Crane gassed after the first and Huerta was landing almost at will, even using the jumbo-tron to land a few elbows when crane was behind him.

Result: Roger Huerta TKO

Georges St. Pierre vs Josh Koscheck

The comeback kid versus the superstar. GSP was looking to get back to his dominant form after his devastating loss to Matt Serra, and Koscheck was trying to assert himself as a true Welterweight contender after his victory over Diego Sanchez. Kos had only one loss on hie record and was considered the next big thing…until last night. GSP whooped him like he stole somethin for all three rounds.

Result: Georges “Rush” St. Pierre Unanimous Decision

Randy Couture vs Gabriel Gonzaga

The old man vs the Cro Cop killer. After a decent back and forth first round that opened a massive cut on the bridge of Gonzaga’s nose, Couture simply dominated the next three rounds. Holding Gonzaga against the fence and dirty boxing his way to a TKO victory. Apart from a few high kicks that had the potential to put Randy’s lights out, Gonzaga looked tired and beat up from the first round on. Even turning to referee Herb Dean and complaining about not being able to see during the second round. It didn’t matter though, Randy eventually broke Gonzaga down and punished him until a stoppage.

Result: Randy “The Natural” Couture 3rd round TKO Victory

Here are the results from the preliminary bouts:
Renato “Babalu” Sobral defeats David Heath by submission in round two
Frank Mir defeats Antoni Hardonk by submission in round one
Thales Leites defeats Ryan Jensen by submission in round one
Clay Guida defeats Marcus Aurelio by split decision

UFC74 Weigh In Results and Odds Recap

ufc_wallpaper072.jpg The only note about the weigh-ins that is noteworthy is the Thiales Leites didn’t make weight the first time up coming in at 188lbs, but he came back to crack the 185 mark within the two hour limit.

Fighters weights are in brackets beside their name.

(For those of you who aren’t familiar with the betting stuff all you need to know is that a minus number means that fighter is the favorite, and that is the amount you have to bet to make $100. e.g.-130 means you have to pony up $130 to win $100 back, or $230 total. If its a plus number, thats the amount you win if you bet $100. e.g. +220 means bet $100 bucks, win $220 back, or $320 total. see…its easy.)
Randy Couture (228.5) vs Gabriel Gonzaga (252)

Allright, as of tonight Gonzaga was hanging steady as a -130 favorite, putting Randy at +100.

Georges St. Pierre (170) vs. Josh Koscheck (170)

This line opened realy tight but has blown up to put St. Pierre as a -280 favorite over Kos whose at +210. Thats good money for a guy thats 11-1 and on a 5 fight winning streak.

Joe Stevenson (155) vs. Kurt Pellegrino (155)

Joe is a real deal contender, no surprise that he’s still a -300 favorite here. Pellegrino is a longshot at +220 though, not sure it matters.

Kendall Grove (184) vs. Patrick Cote (184.5)

Grove is one helluva good fighterand it shows that he’s a -260 fave, if he goes to the mat with Cote he’ll be in great shape, but Cote has a great punchers chance and at +200 that could be enough to sway some bettors over to Cote’s corner.

Roger Huerta (155) vs. Alberto Crane (155)

Roger Huerta is a bona fide superstar, but dont get it twisted, Alberto Crane is the REAL DEAL! Huerta is a -350 favorite but Crane has some MASSIVE value at +280. I’m just sayin.

Renato “Babalu” Sobral (204) vs. David Heath (205)

Babalu, fresh off a night in the drunk tank is favored at -280 over Heath who stands at +210. Is Sobral’s chin back together and ready to take some damage?

Frank Mir (255) vs. Antoni Hardonk (244)

Mir is a slight favorite at -185, but if we see the old frank Mir this could be a blowout. But due to his inconsistency as of late, Hardonk is hanging around as a +145

Thales Leites (185) vs. Ryan Jensen (185)

Leites barely made weight, but it didn’t affect the odds, Thales stands as a -300 favorite, putting Jensen at +220

Marcus Aurelio (155) vs. Clay Guida (155)

Clay is friggin awesome, he got robbed in the Tyson Griffin fight and this is theUFC’s way of saying sorry. He’s an itty bitty favorite at-140, Aurelio is going to be one heck of battle and maybe some good dough at +110

Check out BetUS.com if you wanna bet. Good luck y’all.

UFC74 Fighter Update - Georges St. Pierre

Georges St. Pierre (-280) vs Josh “Kos” Koscheck (+220)

gsp.jpg Is anybody as nervous about this fight as I am? I mean, there was a time when GSP frickin ANNIHILATED the most dominant Welterweight in the history of the UFC and we all sat back and waited for him to reign supreme over the division for years to come. Then BLAMMO! It’s all over.

Coming back from a loss in any sport is a difficult thing to do. Coming back from a BRUTAL loss, well thats even tougher. But coming back after you lose to a +850 underdog in your first title defense after destroying your arch nemesis in front of millions of adoring fans…well that’s darn near impossible.

Especially when there are questions about your heart and mental toughness.

Granted, GSP showed some MASSIVE cojones in his second fight against Hughes, but in their first showdown he was admittedly frazzled, and against Serra he spoke about his lack luster training and how he didn’t take his opponent seriously…another mental error.

This raises concern because believe it or not, love him or hate him, Josh Koscheck is as mentally tough as they come. He might seem like a cocky prick but understand that his confidence in his abilities is UNWAIVERING.

This guy is absolutely unflappable.

My concern here is not for GSP’s physical attributes or technical abilities…its that spark, that flicker that we all saw in his eyes when he stepped in the ring with his former idol for a second time and not only took his belt, but I think he walked away with his wallet and car keys too.

I believe that Georges St. Pierre is a better fighter than Josh Koscheck, in almost every aspect of mma. But he was also better than Serra, and better than Hughes the first time but he still lost.

What continues to make me so damn nervous about this fight is the fact that every time Josh Koscheck has stepped into the ring, the guys he was fighting were ALMOST ALWAYS better fighters than him. And he’s 9 - 1.

Scary.
