UFC73 - Sean Sherk Vs. Hermes Franca

It’s hard to believe that a fight like this was so low on the card!

Round one: Sherk immediately shoots for the takedown and Franca reacts with a big knee that Sherk takes solidly on the face but he gets Franca down only to land in a guillotine choke from Franca.

Sherk escapes the choke and makes it on top of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt’s full guard and landing a few good punches from above. Sherk has full mount then wrestles Franca with some great movement on the mat to side control then back on top. Franca is being very cautious and Sherk’s working tirelessly to find a weak spot to exploit a submission from. Sherk is back on top and hitting a few elbows home but nothing truly effective due to Franca’s great defence. Sherk gets the mount again and Franca reverses but Sherk soon bucks him off and turns it around. A great display of power and wrestling form Sherk and good defence from Franca but Sherk won that round.

Round two: Leg kick from Franca, Sherk shoots for the takedown and Hermes hits AGAIN with the same knee reaction from the first round. Just like in round one, Sherk takes that knee like it was nothing but lands in Franca’s guillotine choke only to escape again. Sherk in full mount again and Franca reverses only for Sherk to get control of the fight again in a head to toe position then quickly into Franca’s half guard and landing a big elbow. Sherk gets side control and is looking again for that position to submit Franca. Franca shakes off Sherk only for Sherk to take it back to him in the dominant position having side control only for Franca to reverse it and get the guillotine again. Sherk needs to pull the tiny amount of his neck that he has to stop this repeated guillotine attempt from Franca. Saved by the bell.

Round three: Sherk shoots and grabs Franca and slams him to the mat and then takes the top position and drops some nice blows from above but none of the punch again are truly effective. Franca is defending only for Sherk to land a good elbow which forces him to get out of that position. Sherk makes it back on top and then works the fight from the side. Sherk takes Franca’s back and gets some nice hooked punches to the face of Franca. Sherk’s known for his work rate and stamina but this fights definitely slowed down which is shown by Sherks draped all over Franca on a not so magical blanket ride and Franca wriggles away but Sherk gets back on top and tries to take Franca’s arm off with an Americana - collegiate wrestling 101 kids.

Round four: Sherk’s always going to try totake this fight to the mat and Franca knows it, he also knows when and throw a perfectly timed knee into Sherk’s face AGAIN. LEARN SHERK, LEARN!!!

He doesn’t seem phased but it anonys me that he let’s Franca do that. He gets on top only for Franca to get the fight back onto their feet. From here Franca can knock people out… but Sherk takes him down again only for Franca to bring it back up allowing Sherk to SLAM him down again and gain the control of Franca’s side and get some good punches while looking for a way to submit him. In the meantime he throws a couple of good knee strikes to the body. Franca takes the fight back to their feet and Sherk tries to takedown and takes another knee but takes his back and that’s the end of round four.

Round five: I look to my buddy and say “Holy crap, is this the fith round already?!” What a fight, this is a great fight, I hate the people booing, I kinda wanna let Sherk and Franca loose on them to kcik the crap out of them.

Sherk doesn’t take a knee to the face on the takedown this time which I am relieved to see. He does however slam Franca down and pass to his half guard and drop some tightly packed elbows and immediately looks for a way to get some way of ending this fight. Franca hits Sherk on his seemingly unbreakable jaw with an up kick from his back. Sherk is unphased.

Sherk takes Franca down again and get’s some dangerous looking punches in and then takes Franca’s back. They stand up and Sherk is hopping away from the single leg that Franca has and escapes a knee bar attempt. Sherk is on top and it’s definitely his fight as the haters boo and the bell rings.

PEOPLE NEED TO STOP BEING A-HOLES AND STOP THAT BOOING CRAP!

Sherk’s arm is lifted and he rightfully defends his title with a unanimous decision. That was a great technical fight, and not a lot of hard hitting but it was a great fight.

UFC73 - Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Vs. Heath Herring

Big Nog in the UFC, crazy!

Round one: Nogueira takes Herring down from the clinch and gets the control of his opponents side. He gets in some non-effective punches as herring moves the fight up to his feet again. They trade a few punches from their feet but Big Nog is stalking Herring just like Cro Cop Vs. Eddie Sanchez. Big Nog has a nice combo of punches set up followed by a knee from close range with Herring countering with an uppercut that doesn’t hurt Big Nog. Herring gets stung with a straight left and a knee. Herring swings a reaching kick to the head of Nogueira and Big Nog looks like he could be out, wow, I am sure he was knocked out just then but the bell rings and the round is up!

Round two: Big Nog was for sure phased by that vicious head kick but I am sure he still dominated that round and I am not sure if the judges saw that and gave him the points for it in lieu of Herrings big kick! Herring seems to be staying back, Nogueira takes his time to regain his composure and I think Herring is so stupid for letting him back in the fight.

Nogueira seems to be invigorated and is jabbing and finding his range for a nice combo. Herring is twitching and itching to throw that same kick again and has totally let the big man off the hook here tonight.

Big Nog takes Herring down and gets the full mount then the back only for Herring to roll into the top of Nogueira. They both stand up and Nogueira throw those stinging jabs to find his range. Herring kicks the leg of Nogueira, countered with a nice jab to find the right distance again only to lock up against the Octagon and score a takedown and end the round.

Round three: Nogueira with another great combo although they both look tired. Some nice jabs to find the range again from Nogueira and a nice leg kick from Herring to keep Nogueira back. Big Nog scores and other take down and gets the control of Herrings side and then taking the back. He’s a skilled Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert and this is where his skills come into play. He gets a tight choke and Herring escapes and from the top Big Nog is trying to lock up the arm of Herring into a Kimura only for Herring to wriggle out and spin free. Big Nog’s got control of the fight on the mat but Herring takes it back to their feet and then they lock up into a clinch on the Octagon fence. They break the clinch and Herring throws another less-telegraphed head kick while Nogueira works the range-finding solid jab of his. Herring is tired and his weaker leg kicks show it. Time is almost up and Big Nog was lucky to get through to the second round but it looks like he won it.

The result comes in and Nogueira gets the win over Heath Herring by a unanimous decision.

UFC73 Preview - Sherk vs Herring

Let me start of by saying I love the “Muscle Shark”. It’s the best nickname in MMA and he’s a great fighter. At UFC73 he’ll be defending his belt against Hermes Franca. I like this fight because I think it’s going to be exciting - AND my man Sherk will walk away with his belt.

Sherk’s got a lot in the cardio-tank and if this title fight goes the distance, he will be going just as hard as when the opening bell rang. It’s a fairly evenly matched fight but Sherk, as a -280 favorite has the advantage in my books.

This matchup against Hermes Franca is a great one for UFC fans. These guys are big 155 pounders and dangerous fighters. You can bank on a variety of action. From slams to submission attempts to big striking, these little guys are going to put on a great show.

Each fighter is built sort of like the mini-fridge that I had in my college dorm room - except these guys are covered in muscle instead of little poetry magnets…(yup - I just said that). The fridge may have even had a more defined neck - the point is these guys are tanks and they’re going to war.

Look for a fast start and a furious pace. Both of these guys are competitors and want it bad. But when it comes down to it, Sherk’s got the edge in almost every category: cardio, quickness, tenacity, strength and drive. He’s also got the belt - and he’s going to for a while.

Prediction - Barring a startling submission win by Franca, Sherk with elbows in the ground and pound against the edge of the cage. The Muscle Shark could go the distance but he won’t have to.

UFC73 Preview - Nogueira vs. Herring

In a UFC73 card that is already loaded with action, a seasoned pro will be hitting the Octagon for the first time - albiet against a familiar opponent.

For MMA fans that follow the sport outside of North America, the UFC debut of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is a highly anticipated bout. For fans that have followed Nogueira’s career, this fight looses a little bit of its punch because this will be the third time he’s faced Heath “Texas Crazy Horse” Herring.

Regardless of the matchup, bringing “Minotauro” over is a great move for the Heavyweight division of the UFC. Sporting a 29-4-1 record that includes wins over Dan Henderson, Enson Inoue, Mirko Cro Cop, Josh Barnett and Heath Herring (twice), Nogueira is a powerhouse that just may tear through this weight class.

“Minotauro” is bringing a tremendous skill set into the UFC. This dude’s been practicing martial arts since he was 4! His BJJ is solid and he’s got obvious knockout power in his mitts. He terrorized Pride and now he’s poised to do it in North America/

Herring - well known for the K-1 “New Year’s Eve Kiss” pre-fight knockout of Yoshihiro Nakao - is an extreme underdog. Coming in at +500, Herring may seem like a tempting bet profit wise…but reality wise I don’t see a chance.

As a -700 favorite, Minotauro will springboard from a victory at UFC73 to the Heavyweight elite. Look for a submission victory in the second round after he’s done wiping the floor with Herring.
