UFC76 Fight Update - Tyson Griffin vs Thiago Tavares

Tyson Griffin and Thiago Tavares have been added to the UFC76 fight card.

Griffin is coming off a controversial split decsion victory over Clay Guida at UFC72. As for Taveres, this cat is undefeated and takes care of most of his opponents early and viciously.

This adds some serious weight towhat is looking to be a pretty gnarly card for the september showdown.

Here’s the updated card sp far, keep in mind that most of these aren’t up on the UFC site yet, and have been “officially” confirmed.

Chuck Liddell vs Keith Jardine

Liddell vs Jardine at UFC76

 chuckcloseup.jpg

Is it just me, or with all of this Liddell Vs Silva Crap going down has this freakin weekend felt like Melrose place invaded the UFC?

UFCJunkie.com reports that the deal is all but announced between the two sluggers.

Jardine is coming off a shocking execution style butt whooping at the hands of the unknown Houston Alexander at UFC71, and Liddell of course, lost his belt and golden boy status of the UFC by blocking a Quinton Jackson right hook with his chin at UFC72.Jardine looks to be  alast minute replacement for Wanderlei Silva, who for whatever reason (I’m sick of trying to figure it all out) couldn’t fight Chuck.

Exciting? I’m not sure…but after watching what Houston Alexander did to Jardine, my gut says this matchup might be in Chuck’s favor.

UFC72 - Rich Franklin Vs. Yushin Okami

Rich Franklin V Yushin OkamiRound one. Both fighters look calm. The crowd is going nuts for Franklin. Straight away there is a nervous exchange of punches. Okami is a lot bigger looking than Franklin, even taller looking despite only his 1 inch height advantage. Okami tries the head kick and Franklin remains in his calm, fixated state. Okami hits home with a nice right and Franklin punches to the body. Okami kicks to the leg and follows up with left punch. Franklin takes a knee from Okami but it’s slow and Okami’s looking slightly better than Franklin even thought there hasn’t been a lot of action. They clinch against the Octagon and Franklin gets some knees through and Okami replies with the same. Big John pulls them apart and then Franklin hits Okami with a big leg kick. Franklin follows up with some good leg kicks against the lanky Okami. Good leg kicks but the fight is noticeably slow and the crowd aren’t too appreciative of that. End of round one.

Round two. Okami makes a nice right and Franklin replies with a leg kick. Franklin hits home with a good left and trades with Okami’s right punch only for Franklin to follow up with a right punch and kick to the head. He then hits Okami with more leg kicks only for Okami to counter with his own, this is close but Franklin’s getting more shots in. With his back to the fence Okami goes for the takedown and Franklin pushes his into the cage fence. From the clinch they are trading knees and Big John separates them again.

Franklin works the leg kicks some more only for Okami to blast him with a big right, Franklin looks dazed but recovers and hits the body of Okami. Okami then kicks to the head of Franklin followed up by a nice right hook. Franklin’s combo return is nice and then kicks to Okami’s head followed by a big left. Franklin’s still leading the fight as the round ends.

Round three. Okami leaps with a flying knee but misses but then lands a right punch that is countered with Franklin’s repetitive but effective leg kick. Franklin hits with a nice body shot then a body kick then locks up with Okami in a clinch. Okami takes Franklin down and is workign from the half guard, dropping down some punches. Okami makes it into full mount and Franklin can’t get out. Okami gets some elbows in from up top and Franklin manages to scramble only for Okami to get the guillotine. Franklin breaks free and gets on top but doesn’t seem able to. Perhaps he’s getting tired from trying to scramble free.

Franklin drops Okami and gets the Kimura in pretty solid but Franklin somehow manages to escape and get on top and get a nice elbow shot in. Then the bell rings and it’s all over, close but I’m giving it to Franklin. Okami did well in the third but Franklin controlled the fight in the first two and came out on top.

The result comes in and it’s just and right - Rich Franklin wins by unanimous decision.

Left cross from Griffin and Ramirez replies straight away with a menacing uppercut. Griffin keeps working the leg kicks, they’re looking pretty solid and they’re a good way to put a big guy down. Ramirez hands are good and hits with a big left/right combo which Griffin reacts to with two knees. Griffin is cut but he kicks the body and jabs, good jabs. Ramirez is swinging wildly, like the shot that Rampage won against Liddell with. Griffin kicks Ramirez in the head and counters with a right. Ramirez kicks to the head and Griffin hits back with a solid right. Griffin hits a good leg kick, two punch combo, nice combo. A great big whack on the head of Ramirez via Griffin’s leg, Ramirez counters and Griffin goes back to the legs and punches straight. Round up.

Round two. Forrest swings out with a kick and Ramirez clinches. Griffin gets in some great knees to the body. Griffin kicks high and follows up with a roght punch. Ramirez hits home with an uppercut. Nice 1-2 from Griffin and a nice leg kick. Ramirez hits home with a good right punch and Griffin replies with another attempt at a head kick. Ramirez kicks to Griffins body and Griffin lands another huge flurry. Griffin goes to after the head kick again and Ramirez hits back with a right punch. Back tot he leg kick by Griffin, they’re being good for him against Ramirez tonight. Griffin is landing some big shots here only for the ref to stop the fight for Ramirez to regain composure after Griffin hits Ramirez in the nut. Ramirez is looking tired an takes his time. The action restarts and Griffin is intent on kicking Ramirez’ head off. Ramirez is visibly tired and is trying to end this fight with a big KO punch. Griffin’s working well, good stamina being show and good combos. Griffin hits home with a good right and the round is up.

Round three. Ramirez needs to come out strong, he’s losing the fight. Big left by Griffin followed by a nicely set up combo and a kick to the head. Griffin lands some uppercuts from the clinch but Ramirez isn’t too bothered. Ramirez scrambles and gets two good right punches and gets away. Griffin goes back to working the leg then a nice 1-2 combo then a nice head then body kick. Now in the clinch Griffin lands a good knee. Griffin slaps the crap out of Ramirez’ leg and it looks like Ramirez’ leg is dead as shown by the limping.

Griffin lands an uppercut then a couple of nice jabs followed by a big right and knee to the gut. Griffin’s combos are excellent and the follow up leg kicks are outstanding then to follow up with a high kick. Great movement. Jumping punch from Griffin then 2 uppercuts, then two big big big body shots followed by a head kick. A great end to the round, a great flurry. Griffin has won it and Ramirez can just about stand. This was a great performance by Griffin.

The result comes in and it’s no surprise - Forrest Griffin wins with a unanimous decision.
