Arlovski to quit UFC?

Andrei Arlovski made a brief statement at a press release last Saturday night hinting that he “will fight very soon”. While this wouldn’t be a big deal for him to make this comment, perhaps we’d be a little more interested if he was making an appearance at the HDNet Fights show in Dallas, Texas at the time?

It’s long been thought that Arlovski’s been given a raw deal by Dana and the UFC and we all know that his contract is up soon. There is not doubt that Arlovski is a quality fighter but seemed to have lacked motivation recently (small paycheck perhaps?) - perhaps a move to Mark Cuban’s HDNet Fights is a possibility?

Vitor Belort Back in the Octagon?

For anyone who’s been around this sport for a while, this recent news of Vitor Belfort coming back to the UFC buzzing around the internet will be met with mixed feelings.

On one hand, you have a man with some of the best hands in the business. Who convincingly stopped Wanderlei Silva,  dominated Gilbert Yvel, was robbed of a victory over Tito Ortiz (that’s my opinion at least) and hung tough with Chuck Liddell.

On the other hand, you have  a mentally weak quitter, with little cardio and a knack for letting his personal problems get the best of him in the ring.

Now, with Belfort attempting to orchestrate what has to be considered at least his fourth come-back attempt, we must ask ourselves the age old question (Everybody say it with me now):

Is this THE OLD VITOR?????

I for one am a huge fan of The “Old” Vitor. Incredible hand speed and a killer instinct second to none make The Old Vitor a pleasure to watch. The “New” Vitor (or Quitter Vitor, or Boy-In-Man’s Body Vitor, or Titor Belfortiz, or whatever you call him), however is absolutely PAINFUL to watch. Watching him give up in fights against Dan Henderson, Randy (twice) and Alistair Overeem (also twice!) really took it’s toll on my believe in “The Phenom”.

Until earlier this year, I had written the man I idolized while growing-up, off as a “Pay Cheque Fighter”.

Then Belfort knocked out up-and-comer Ivan Serati in Cage Rage early in 2007.

I know: Meh…. Big deal.

Then in September, Belfort defeated Cage Rage 205 lbs Champion James Zikic with a broken hand.

Hmmmm, a little more impressive. But I’m still not convinced this is our beloved “Old” Vitor.

Then he opened his mouth…….

Belfort has never been known as a talker. Although frequently citing personal problems for his losses, and frequently claiming he is over said personal problems prior to, umm, another loss. Vitor is not one to show much emotion outside the ring.

Now call me a sucker, but The Phenom’s recent comments have gotten me all fired up! It feels like 1997 again!!!

Yeah, OK. I probably am a sucker. But I am seeing something flow from Vitor that I’ve NEVER seen before: Anger. Well, not just anger…….

 Super-pissed-off-ready-to-tear-someone-a-new-arsehole-then-rip-their-head- off-and-shit-down-their-throats kind of anger!!!

He’s pissed at Cage Rage. He’s pissed at the naysayers. And he’s damn sure pissed at Tito! In fact, his comments about Ortiz were what convinced me that he truly has returned to his former self. Belfort said he wants to fight Tito in a winner take all match. IE; only the winner receives a purse, IE; quashing my theory that Vitor is a paycheque fighter.

I don’t know about you, but I’m taking the leap of faith BACK onto the Vitor Bandwagon! If anybodies interested, I’m out front with a full tank of gas, revvin the engine!!!

Sherk: “I will never fight in the state of California again.”

OK. I’ve been trying to be impartial about this, but Sean Sherk’s recent comments about the California Athletic Commission were too much.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Sherk tested positive after his Lightweight Title defense at UFC  73 almost 6 months ago. Since, he has been going on diatribe after diatribe against the Commission, all but swearing on someone’s grave that he’s never touched steroids.

C’mon dude. Get off your high horse……

Most people in this sport have used at some point, be it to heal an injury (as was the case with Sherk’s UFC 73 opponent, Hermes Franca)  or to put on size. Numerous fighters such as Jeff Monson and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh Barnett have recently publicly admitted that they and most other fighters have used steroids on a regular basis.

Now I’m not saying that I know for a fact that Sherk uses (he sure does have all the signs of steroid usage though). I’m simply saying Sherk needs to grow up. If the commission did botch your test, then you have a right to be pissed off. But the reading 12 ng/ml was 6 times the legal Olympic  level. Could their test really be that off?

Saying you’ll never fight in the state of California again is akin to a little kid getting pissed off and taking his ball home.

Seriously dude. Botched test or not. You should just be counting your lucky stars that you’ve still got that title around your waste. Stop crying about it.

Is Fedor Truly Facing The Best?

With Fedor set to fight K-1 Champ Hong Man Choi on New Years Eve, many are complaining about the talent level the world’s #1 ranked fighter will be facing, now that he has elected not to sign with the UFC. Before jumping to any conclusions, let’s ask ourselves one question:

Would he really be facing the best if he did sign with Dana and the boys?

I think not. Let’s look to history for proof:

The UFC signs Cro Cop. Recognized as # 2 heavyweight in the world at the time. So who do they pit the world’s deadliest striker against? Tim Sylvia? Andrei Arlovski? No. Eddie Sanchez, Gabe Gonzaga and Cheik Kongo.

Geez. Thanks Joe Silva. They were some really great fantasy match ups you treated us to!

Then……..

The UFC signs Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira . Once again, widely recognized as #2 heavyweight. Who does he get? Randy? How about Brandon Vera? That would be interesting…….

How about Heath Herring for a third time?

How about no? I guess you could call it the rubber match…… that is if Herring had managed to win one of the two previous fights. Completely unnecessary. Although he wins a decision, Minotauro gets dropped and nearly finished in the first round, somewhat tarnishing his debut.

And finally…….

The UFC signs Shogun. #1 ranked light heavyweight in the world. Surely they will get this one right. Throw him Chuck, or even Tito for God’s sake! This guy absolutely demolished the current champ Rampage. So who does he get?

A guy who just lost to Jardine and squeaked  out a decision over Hector Ramirez.

Ummmmmm, yeah. That’s what we were all waiting for.

Now, I’m not bashing the aforementioned opposition. In fact, all but Sanchez and Herring managed to pull off upset victories. I’m merely pointing out that the UFC’s matchmaking for these elite fighters has been anything but a fantasy league. Who do you think they would have been matching Fedor up against had they signed him? Given the recent track record, I somehow doubt it would be a dream match.

I don’t know about you, but Fedor vs Choi is more appealing to me than Fedor vs Dan Christison……

Serra Out, GSP In

Georges St. Pierre will get another chance to kick Matt Hughes in the balls on December 29th when he steps in for Welterweight Champion Matt Serra in the main event of UFC 79: Nemesis.

Serra herniated a disc in his back during training last week and was forced to withdraw from the fight. Kudos to the UFC for putting in a viable contender in his place.

This fight will be for the Interim Welterweight Championship. One can only assume that Serra will fight the winner to unify the titles once he has recovered from his injury.

Hughes and GSP have fought twice before, each owning one victory.
