Elite XC Roundup

Here’s a brief overview of last night’s Elite XC card from Texas:

In the opening contest, Antonio Silva hammer fisted the hell outta Johnathan Wiezorek before finishing the fight with a rear naked choke.

Aussie standout fighter Kyle Noke looked to have some slick Jiu-Jitsu in his victory over Seth “The Doctor” Kleinbeck. It was a real doctor however, who called a stop to the fight when Noke opened up a vagina sized gash over Kleinbeck’s left eye.

Up and coming welterweight Jake Shields looked sloppy in the opening minutes of his contest with Mike Pyle but managed to catch Pyle with a rear naked choke to end the fight.

Street fighting and Youtube legend Kevin Ferguson AKA. Kimbo Slice made short work of Bo Cantrell in his MMA debut. In what initially appeared to be a possible work, Slice threw only 1 body shot and a glancing elbow to elicit a tap out from Cantrell at the 0:19 second mark. Once Cantrell got to his feet however, it was clear he was caught by something the camera apparently missed as his entire face was swelling up in the shape of one of Kimbo’s giant ham hocks.

In the main event of the evening, Karl James Noons dominated Nick Diaz with beautiful hand combinations to capture the vacant 160 pound championship. KJ caught Diaz with a hard body shot early in the first which seemed to suck the life out of the Ralph Macchio look a like. The fight was another doctor stoppage after the first round as Diaz’s left eye had completely swollen shut. Diaz vehemently protested the stoppage but as Noons said in his post fight interview “How many times did I knock him down? I would have finished him soon if the doctor didn’t stop it.”

That’s a wrap!

UFC77 Results

I turned up pretty late for the fight, maybe three or four fights to go and got to see some very predictable match ups. They really should have called this UFC77: “Predictable”. The main fight went just like the last one, everyone was cheering Silva and I was the only one hoping Franklin would find a way through and hurt Silva.

Tim Sylvia “won” his fight in the most unbelievably lackluster way. He pressed Brandon Vera against the cage and used his 35llb and 5 inch height to his advantage. In the few moments when he wasn’t man hugging Vera there were a few exchanges (literally a few though) were Sylvia did hit home and win the points. Ultimately it went to a points decision for Tim who’ll fight for the title in his next fight. Unbelievable. I have a great few rants coming up about what the hell is going on in the UFC.

the highlight fight of the night was the Alvin Robinson Vs. Jorge Gurgel. Robinson, a BJJ brown belt was supposed to have lost that fight to Gurgel, a BJJ black belt. On paper that is… The end result was an amazing ground and pound game by Robinson that resulted in Gurgel’s face looking like… well, let’s say the elephant man, but in reality it was worse like when Tito ground Shamrock’s face into mince meat.

The rest will come later, I’ll admit I have a little bit of a beer hangover.

UFC80 Rumors

Well pish posh and tally-ho friends!

Looks like UFC80 is headin back to merry old England…again. Newcastle in fact.

Who’s likely to be fighting? PLEASE not Cro Cop again.

Actually, it looks like its going to be Hamil vs Bisping 2,  and feature Marcus Davies, Terry Etim, Jason Tan and maaaaybe Cheik Congo. Not against each other, they’re just probably on the card.

It looks like this is going to go down sometime near the end of January .

What’s With All These Upsets?

After taking some time to recover from the shock of UFC 76, I would like to analyze the current rash of upset victories plaguing not only the UFC, but MMA as a sport in general.

First of all. Lets dispel a myth: It’s not just former Pride fighters coming over to the UFC and getting smoked by seemingly easy prey. Sure that’s been happening. But that’s not all that’s been happening.

In fact, I personally think this “Bizarro World” or whatever you want to call it began back at Pride’s Second Coming PPV in February. That night, in 4 of the 5 main bouts major upsets occurred. Nick Diaz toppled then ranked #1 Lightweight Takanori Gomi. Complete unkown Sokoudjou knocked out heavily favoured Minotoro Nogueira. And most shockingly of all, Dan Henderson (moving up in weight) dethroned Pride 205 lbs kingpin Wanderlei Silva. Silva had at that time held the title for over 5 years.

Here is a list of what I would consider to be SHOCKING upsets since then:

  • Sokoudjou knocks out Ricardo Arona at Pride 34
  • Randy Couture def. Tim Sylvia
  • Matt Serra dominates GSP
  • Gabe Gonzaga knocks out Cro Cop with Filipovic’s own trademark head kick
  • Unknown fighter Houston Alexander knocks out Keith Jardine
  • Cheick Kongo def. Cro Cop
  • Forrest Griffin submits Shogun
  • Keith Jardine def. Chuck Liddell

That’s a pretty healthy list of top 10 guys, beaten by mostly unseeded fighters.

So, what can we learn from looking at this list? Well, only 2 Pride fighters appear in the “lost to UFC fighters” category so I guess it’s safe to say that isn’t the core of the problem. Second, notice that Keith Jardine appears in both the “win” and “loss” column of our little list which brings me to my point (I knew I had one!).

The point is more mismatches are being made these days than ever before. Usually in an effort to “showcase” a fighter against a lesser opponent. I believe the recent unpredictability is due in part to this type of mismatching. These “elite” fights simply aren’t taking their lesser known opponents seriously.

If you don’t believe me, just listen to Jardine’s comments before the Alexander fight. He said he didn’t think he should “Have to fight this guy” implying that he was so superior to Alexander that there would be no point in the bout occurring at all.

Now how hard do you think old Kiethy boy trained for that fight?

Cro Cop is also one who is notorious for underestimating his opponents. *cough* Kevin Randleman *cough*

In a sport with 4 ounce gloves, where knees, elbows and choking are all fair game - you can’t afford to underestimate ANYONE.

UFC75 - Decision Vs Decision

All of the top three fights went the distance. Here are the results:

Winner Loser Method Round - Time
Jess Liaudin Anthony Torres TKO (Strikes) 1 - 4:10
Dennis Siver Naoyuki Kotani KO (punch) 2 - 2:04
Thiago Silva Tomasz Drwal TKO (Strikes) 2 - 4:23
Gleison Tibau Terry Etim Decision (Unanimous) 3 - 5:00
Houston Alexander Alessio Sakara TKO (Strikes) 1 - 1:01
Marcus Davis Paul Taylor Submission (Armbar) 1 - 4:14
Cheick Kongo Mirko Filipovic Decision (Unanimous) 3 - 5:00
Michael Bisping Matt Hamill Decision (split) 3 - 5:00
Quinton Jackson Dan Henderson Decision (Unanimous) 5 - 5:00

Tommorow comes the post fight reviews and news about the rematches… It definitely looks like its a Quinton Jackson Vs Dan Henderson rematch again except his time, we’ll be paying.
