UFC72 Matchup Breakdown - MacDonald vs Singer

This is the first of my matchup breakdowns, I’m gonna shed some light into the world of MMA handicapping and oddsmaking in the next few days.

Not that that means a damn thing since there’s been nothing but grotesque upsets in the last few months, making us fight prognosticators look like a bunch of hacks…but trust me, there is a formula and a few categories that we can match fighters against head to head that gives a fairly good cross section of what SHOULD happen in a fight. And even if it doesn’t, its a great way to get a grasp of the game!

UFC72 Matchup Breakdown #1 - MacDonald vs Singer

Our favorite Canuck is back pretty quick after the hammering he took at the hands of Ace. He had a damn good streak going too, 6 MMA wins in a row, two of which were UFC victories.

Singer showed a lot of cojones during TUF3, losing to Ed Herman in the Semi’s. Since that loss, He’s had wins against Ross Pointon in the TUF3 finale and Josh Haynes at the Ortiz - Shamrock 3 undercard. He did get rocked by Rich Franklin’s UFC72 opponent Yushin Okami which makes for a logical match up in MacDonald.

We’re going to break down each fight into 5 categories (there are craploads more, but this is what we’ll use) : Striking, Submissions, Defense, Balls, Competition

1) Striking - 18 wins by J-mac…one TKO. He’s shown a lot of improvement in this category but hasn’t been able to hang with bangers, even overrated ones…on the other hand, Singer has only one knockout as well. The only thing that skews this category is the fact that Rory singer has NEVER been KO’d. I don’t think Jason has the ability to put this kid down.

EDGE: Singer

2) Submissions - These dudes are straight up submissions ballers. Between these two they have 29 wins with 23 submissions. Sick. The only tiebreaker is the variety of submissions. Jason Macdonald has literally submitted people in every manner imaginable, he can make people tapout with a wink from his dressing room.

EDGE: MacDonald

3) Defense - Both guys are active and extremely capable in the mount and/or guard, its difficult to see who has a distinct advantage. You have take into account the fact that Singer has never been knocked out, but the way Macdonald takes punishment without going out adds to his capability to withstand an attack…which is essentially defense.

EDGE: Even

4) Balls - Without question its Macdonald. Both these guys are hella tough but J-Mac took a savage beating at the hands of Rich Franklin and not only didn’t go out, he didn’t go down…his freaking corner had to throw in the towel.

EDGE: MacDonald

5) Competition - Macdonald has lost 8 times…to essentially the cream of the crop of the recent UFC; Franklin, Cote, Starnes, Eastman, Carter. Singer has lost too, but that not what puts him behind in this category…its who he’s beat. On that list is a guy named Butch Bacon (wtf?). And other than losing badly to Yushin Okami…he hasn’t faced nearly the level of competition of Macdonald.

EDGE: Macdonald

3 -1 for the Canadian kid, there you go…according to this highly technical analysis Macdonald should win this handily!

Oh wait, this is the frikkin UFC, I’m gonna look like a total douchebag with this pick in about four days…awesome.

Betting Odds on Jackson Vs Liddell

Public Enemy - don’t believe the hypeJust like Public Enemy said: Don’t believe the hype!

Blogs, websites, myspace page and even ESPN Cover’s are predicting the result for the much awaited matchup but bookmakers are being so slim with the odds going in Liddell’s favor that it shows a certain lack of faith in his ability to close the deal and win the fight and add to his impressive 20-3-0 record.

The fact that he’s only -280 at best is testament to the lack of faith. Bookmakers
aren’t listening to the hype, after all, they’re the money men… What do you guys think of this?

UFC71 Odds

Our Sportsbook homey’s at BetUS.com have updated odds for two of the main events from UFC71 on May 26th.

In the main event, Chuck Liddell still sits as a favorite over Quinton Jackson. Here are the updated numbers:

Chuck Liddell (-240) Quinton Jackson (+190)

This isn’t considered a heavy favorite for Liddell, but its still a bit of a surprise considering that Liddell already lost to Quinton Jackson. Jackson is almost a good bet at +190, thats a payout of close to $200 for a victory, not that he’s going to win, but the money is okay.

Josh Burkman (+220) Karo Parisyan (-300)

This is getting into heavy fave territory. at (-300), you would have to bet $300 on Parisyan in order to make $100, where Burkman pays out $220 for every $100 you bet. Not bad considering the massive upsets we’ve seen as of late.

UFC70 Betting

So I spoke to the dude at BetUS and he’s the guy that does the podcast, nice guy. He got me that prop made for Crop Cop to win by Kick & KO.

Anyway, on to the main fights. $100 bet on Gabriel Gonzaga will win $350 whereas you have to bet $500 on Cro Cop to win $100. The smart money is on Cro Cop but with so little of a return why wouldn’t someone throw $50 on Gonzaga, that’s $175 - not bad.

Similarly, Bisping is favorite and thus you have to bet $500 on him to win $100. For Sinosic, if you bet $100 you could win $350. There is money to be made here people!

Arlovski and Werdum are both -115. This is strange, I would have had this fight heaviy in the odds of Arlovski but it seems that the BetUS bookmakers are unsure. Hrmmm…

Lyoto Machida is a safe bet win - you will however need to get $350 on him to win $100. There is money to be made, I would put a $100 bet against either Bisping or Cro Cop. You have a good chance that one may lose in an upset (hell, Matt Serra beating Georges St. Pierre?)

BetUS Cro Cop prop bet

Looks like BetUS listened to my idea about a prop bet for Cro Cop. I suggested a line on the odds of Cro Cop winning by left kick KO. I’m waiting on the line but it’s something like:

  • 5/2 : for the head kick KO
  • 10/1 : Submission
  • -150 : TKO Strikes
  • +500 : Other

Looks like some fun to be had. BetUS rock, they really have taken MMA and UFC betting up another notch.
