Jorge Gurgel is Back……. Again

O.K. “Big Mac” has taken a few months off to prepare for a fight, but I had to come out of hiding to voice my shock…. nay, DISGUST at the fact that Jorge Gurgel is back in the UFC after four, count ‘em FOUR bland performances in the Octagon.

C’mon folks, even Daniel “I’m an ULTIMATE FIGHTER!” Abbadi gave him all he could handle…..

Gurgel has never finished a fight in the UFC and other than the ability to take a punch, he’s show no real A level skills. Although that doesn’t stop Joe Rogan from touting his “SICK Jiu-Jitsu” skills. Perhaps he means sick as in “sick in bed at home” cuz Gurgel certainly hasn’t been bringing them to the Octagon!

What’s worse, anytime Gurgel loses he makes excuses. Whether it was his knee on The Ultimate Fighter season 2 when he lost to Jason Von Flu, or the fact that Mark Hominick didn’t stand still long enough for Gurgel to take him down, Jorge is always ready and willing to blame the loss on something other than his lack of talent.

Now, I know that Gurgel is joined at the hip (or possibly other body part) with former Middleweight Champ Rich Franklin. But after 2 losses to Anderson Silva, “Ace” is no longer Dana’s golden boy. So God only knows what is motivating them to keep ramming Gurgel down our throats.

Oh well. At least now we can hold out hope for the return of Jason Thacker……..

Liddell vs. Silva: Who Takes It?

Here on the eve of arguably the biggest card in the history of the UFC, we are going to look at the co-headlining bout. How do the combatants in (arguably) the most anticipated fight in the history of MMA stack up? I am going to come right out and say that I think Wanderlei is going to defeat Chuck. I know there are many Liddell fans on this site who will not agree so please allow me to explain before you string me up and beat me (although, I might actually enjoy that)……..

This fight really could go many different ways. Since both fighters are coming off back-to-back losses, they may both try to protect their records and fight a defensive, boring fight where neither fighter is willing to take any chances and the only knock out comes at the expense of the audience who falls asleep. But I doubt that. Another possibility is Silva may try to take the fight to the mat where he will most likely have an advantage. I doubt this scenario also though, as Silva has not employed this strategy since he fought “Dirty” Bob Schrijber back in 2000. Wand is always willing to strike these days, even if he’s out gunned. The third possibility is both fighters will come out all guns blazing, aiming to tear each other’s heads off in an effort to erase any memory of their previous losses!!! This is the strategy I think both fighters will employ and we will use this for the basis of this analysis.

First of all, both fighters have impressive records. Chuck owns victories over Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz and Wanderlei has defeated the likes of Rampage Jackson and Dan Henderson. While it’s difficult to say who’s faced the stiffer competition, I would say “The Axe Murderer” has faced better strikers than “The Iceman”. Silva has faced Mark Hunt and fought Cro Cop twice going the distance with each of them once and losing to Cro Cop in the 2006 Pride GP. Chuck really hasn’t fought anyone with comparable skills with the aforementioned Rampage being the most accomplished striker he has competed against since early in his career when he fought “Pele” Landi Jons.

One thing I have heard from a lot of people lately is “Chuck is a counter puncher and Silva will play right into that”. True, old Chucky boy does prefer to return fire as opposed to initiate things but he has never fought anyone in his professional career that comes forward as aggressively as Wanderlei will. Chuck is not a graceful counter puncher either. It’s not so much his fancy footwork which has allowed him to put away so many fighters as say, his ability to effectively digest fists. He doesn’t mind eating a few punches in exchanges and Silva will put a hurtin’ on him if he tries to stay in the pocket.

Another reason I see Silva taking this one is the fact that in addition to having a deeper overall skill set, Wand is also a more well rounded striker. Wanderlei has the ability to put you away with both hands, both feet and both knees. Aside from a highlight reel KO of Babalu back in 2002, Chuck generally lets his fists do the talking. He also showed in the Jardine fight that he just isn’t interested in blocking leg kicks and that is not a good way to fight against a Muay Thai verteran like Silva.

Which brings me to our final point: Knees.

While he hasn’t really utilized them lately, knees from the clinch are Silva’s most dangerous weapon. He used them to destroy world class competition like Henderson, Sakuraba, Yoshida and Rampage (twice!). Chuck has never faced anyone with a clinch game as good as Wanderlei’s and I believe that will be the single biggest deciding factor in this fight. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see Chuck try to get the fight to the ground if he takes enough abuse in the clinch. Yes, Wand’s knees are absolutely DEADLY. If you need a point of reference watch either of the Silva/Jackson bouts. Brutal.

In summation, I think Wand has faced better strikers than Chuck and I don’t think Liddell will show him anything he hasn’t seen before. Chucky on the other hand has made a career out of counter punching with wrestlers. He has not faired well against the two decent strikers who he has recently faced and Wanderlei is unquestionably a better striker than either of them. Wanderlei also has the potential to throw a lot of things at Chuck he may never have had to deal with in The Octagon before.

Mark these words: When they clinch – it’s good night for The Iceman!

Vitor Belort Back in the Octagon?

For anyone who’s been around this sport for a while, this recent news of Vitor Belfort coming back to the UFC buzzing around the internet will be met with mixed feelings.

On one hand, you have a man with some of the best hands in the business. Who convincingly stopped Wanderlei Silva,  dominated Gilbert Yvel, was robbed of a victory over Tito Ortiz (that’s my opinion at least) and hung tough with Chuck Liddell.

On the other hand, you have  a mentally weak quitter, with little cardio and a knack for letting his personal problems get the best of him in the ring.

Now, with Belfort attempting to orchestrate what has to be considered at least his fourth come-back attempt, we must ask ourselves the age old question (Everybody say it with me now):

Is this THE OLD VITOR?????

I for one am a huge fan of The “Old” Vitor. Incredible hand speed and a killer instinct second to none make The Old Vitor a pleasure to watch. The “New” Vitor (or Quitter Vitor, or Boy-In-Man’s Body Vitor, or Titor Belfortiz, or whatever you call him), however is absolutely PAINFUL to watch. Watching him give up in fights against Dan Henderson, Randy (twice) and Alistair Overeem (also twice!) really took it’s toll on my believe in “The Phenom”.

Until earlier this year, I had written the man I idolized while growing-up, off as a “Pay Cheque Fighter”.

Then Belfort knocked out up-and-comer Ivan Serati in Cage Rage early in 2007.

I know: Meh…. Big deal.

Then in September, Belfort defeated Cage Rage 205 lbs Champion James Zikic with a broken hand.

Hmmmm, a little more impressive. But I’m still not convinced this is our beloved “Old” Vitor.

Then he opened his mouth…….

Belfort has never been known as a talker. Although frequently citing personal problems for his losses, and frequently claiming he is over said personal problems prior to, umm, another loss. Vitor is not one to show much emotion outside the ring.

Now call me a sucker, but The Phenom’s recent comments have gotten me all fired up! It feels like 1997 again!!!

Yeah, OK. I probably am a sucker. But I am seeing something flow from Vitor that I’ve NEVER seen before: Anger. Well, not just anger…….

 Super-pissed-off-ready-to-tear-someone-a-new-arsehole-then-rip-their-head- off-and-shit-down-their-throats kind of anger!!!

He’s pissed at Cage Rage. He’s pissed at the naysayers. And he’s damn sure pissed at Tito! In fact, his comments about Ortiz were what convinced me that he truly has returned to his former self. Belfort said he wants to fight Tito in a winner take all match. IE; only the winner receives a purse, IE; quashing my theory that Vitor is a paycheque fighter.

I don’t know about you, but I’m taking the leap of faith BACK onto the Vitor Bandwagon! If anybodies interested, I’m out front with a full tank of gas, revvin the engine!!!

“Big” John McCarthy Hangs Up The Gloves

…… Well, the black “bend over and spread ‘em” latex gloves that is.

Big John has elected to quit his referring gig with the UFC in favor of becoming an on-air personality with Canadian cable channel The Fight Network.

Aside from fight analysis and color commentary, McCarty will also act as a “Strategic Advisor” behind the scenes…… Whatever that means.

Big John will ref his last fight for the UFC on saturday night during the Ultimate Fighter Finale. His first assignment in his new vocation will be providing the color commentary on the December 14th TKO pay-per-view.

Apparently, the fighters aren’t the only ones Zuffa is underpaying…….
