UFC74 Results Update - Babalu? Babaloser!

babamug.jpgSeriously?

After recently getting arrested for spitting on a bouncer in an altercation, Renato “Babalu” Sobral took another huge step towards strengthening the credibility of the UFC…

At the end of his dominating UFC74 undercard victory versus David Heath, Babalu took it too far.

After opening a HUGE gash on Heath’s head during the fight, Sobral ended the match with a choke. While in the choke, Heath tapped the canvas, tapped Sobral’s arm, and then referee Steve Mazzagatti waved the fight and attempted to push Sobral off. Babalu held on until the tapping turned into twitching and Heath was unconcious on the mat.

Gross. This was an audacious slap in the face of the trust and sportsmanship associated with getting into the Octagon - sure these guys are in there FIGHTING but without that element of trust, critics of MMA can become justified in their concerns.

Babalu’s $25,000 purse for the UFC74 fight is currently being held, with further disiplinary action to come. I hope it’s harsh.

UFC74 Fighter Look Alikes - Josh Koscheck

UFC74 fighter Josh “Kos” Koscheck looks like a cabbage patch doll. For real.

I really don’t know how I didn’t notice this before.

Sherk Appeals Ban

At a hearing in Los Angeles on the 6th of July:

the California State Athletic Commission granted a continuance for UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk’s appeal of his positive test for the banned substance “Nandrolone” after his July 7th win over Hermes Franca at UFC 73 in Sacramento.

Sherk’s attorney Howard L. Jacobs requested the continuance to allow time to acquire documentation from the laboratory where the drug tests were conducted.[1]

What does this mean for Sherk? Well, what else can come back from a lab when they’ve already found the crap in his samples? Come October when the next meeting of the Cal State Athletic Commission happens, what more can they say?
Franca also attended the meeting and admitted abusing the Drostanolone substance and was suspended for a year and fined $2,500. I don’t see why this case is dragging on , I mean whether he “accidentally” took this substance it’s still illegal and whether intentional or not he’s furked.

Thoughts and comments welcome.

UFC and Spike to Sign New Deal

spike_tv_logo.jpg The UFC is reportedly about to ink a contract extension with Spike TV in the $100 million range. Yes, quite obviously, the 24-hour dude-fest-extravaganza that is Spike will renew one of its most popular commodities.

The original deal was set to expire in 2008

The first deal - which was put in place in 2005 for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 1 - was quite a bit riskier than the new one. Spike played a HUGE role in the UFC’s rise to respectability and popularity.

Under the deal, Spike would continue to run shows like TUF, Fight Nights, and various UFC coverage and previews. The new deal is also slated to run more live events than before.

The deal is reportedly “multi-year”, but no official length has been released.

In another recent release, it has been stated that Spike and Dana White are BFF AE AE*.

*Best Friends Forever. And Ever. And Ever.
