Do it yourself training? Is it even possible to train yourself to become a professional MMA fighter? You could, but an instructional fight DVD, start training, get yourself into the UFC, then become champion…? Ha Ha, ok yeah, that won’t work, I don’t think so.
Well, crazy as it seems, it did work for former UFC middleweight champion, Evan Tanner. Evan purchased Royce & Rorion Gracie’s instructional videos and got down to training - in his living room! That’s how he learned his submissions. To be fair Evan already had a solid wrestling background. He was state champion in his junior and senior years, but it was the videos that prompted him into entering MMA competition.
van is currently setting up a foundation for disadvantaged fighters (details at evantanner.net). I wish him all the best. He deserves it. He’ll also be fighting in the UFC around September at UFC76 or UFC76.
Im off to buy that dvd, you never know…

If you put your mind to it and have a little drive and determination….anythings possible…and that goes for everything.
i think for it to work, you need to already have the drive and commitment of a fighter, and not enough cash for a real trainer.
I think it could help but only if you already knew the fight game. You would have to have some skill in either boxing or wrestling. But than again there are some people that are just gifted and can learn and catch on to things quick and easy.
I think if you have nothing to lose and you can see a way of making something happen then that is motivation. I limped out of a warzone with a broken foot. If I stopped I wouldn’t have been here talking smack today.
I think this guy has guts and most importantly he has skills.
What I think is going to happen is that Yushin Okami will beat Rich Franklin and take on Silva for the Middleweight belt and Tanner will get a shot at Franklin for the their third fight in which Franklin has won the last two.
Alternatively and what I want to see is Franklin beat Okami and then Silva and retake the Middleweight bling.
Somewhere along the line Franklin and Tanner must meet…
I don’t know but for some reason I still think Rich is gonna win this fight and then he is gonna go up against Silva for the belt and lose and then I see him fighting Tanner. I don’t know why but I just feel it that way. But you are right Franklin and Tanner must meet at least one more time.
tanner took one hell of a beating off franklin previously.i ended up feeling sorry 4 the guy.i was glad when it was stopped.a lot has happened since tho.franklin took a beating from silva.evan’s had a break and time 2 reflect.it’ll be interesting 2 see what kind of shape evan comes back in,both mentaly and physically.i like both guys and wish them well.
russ, your sounding like uncle albert with your war stories.ha ha
War stories, funny :p
Tanner’s a cool guy, I hope he can give it a shot and shoot for the title. The thing is, I like both Tanner and Franklin. Talk about split over who I want to win.
First I would like to reply about the home training.I think all you need is a fighters spirit. You can’t teach guts.Tanner is one badass who can take a hell of a beating as well as give it the fighters instinct is god given although to learn the technical part on his own is just Evan being driven.
Now on the Franklin vs.Tanner fight I would love to see it.I’m not sure about when that should be though.I also say Franklin wins in Ireland.
Franklin has to get by Okami first then we’ll check the matchup with Tanner. I am excited for tomorrow. Okami’s stamina/conditioning is an issue whereas Franklin could fight 5×5minute rounds in a desert.
