BJ PENN Vs. Jens Pulver

BJ Penn dominated the fight. End of. Pulver came out of that fight with a new found respect for BJ and was quoted as saying:

“He didn’t go for the easy submission - he tried to beat the hell out of me. I respect him more and more every minute. BJ’s a savage - he is very good.”

Now that’s admitting defeat. Penn was belly to back on his back when next thing his leg hooked Pulver’s arm and the rest was history, Rear Naked Choke and you could see that Pulver was ready to tap but you could tell he didn’t want to. The long story cut short, Penn could have ended that any time after releasing what looked like a set in stone armbar. Torture was definitely something that came to mind.

Manny Gamburyan Vs. Nate Diaz

After pretty much owning Diaz in the first round the weirdest crap ever happened… Nate sprawls as Gamburyan shoots and next thing you see is Manny going ape and the fight stopping and Diaz given the win by submission. Manny’s shoulder popped right out! It was frikkin gross. All attempts at getting a submission were just thwarted by Gamburyan and if it wasn’t for this bizarre result, barring a knockout or submission , then Gamburyan would have won that fight.

The undercard

Thales Leites Vs. Floyd Sword

It was all about Leites all through the fight and there was nothing Sword could do about it. It finished with Leites took Sword’s back and fixed what looked like a potential match winning RNC but then moved down to take a nicely executed arm triangle. Sword tapped and Leites won just under 4 minutes in the first.

Roger Huerta Vs. Doug Evans

This wasn’t supposed to go past the first round but Doug Evans is a tough mofo. It looked good for Evans and he actually won the first round due to his sold ground game and excellent ground and pound. Huerta didn’t look too comfortable on the ground and managed to wriggle free and take t he fight back to the stand up where he didn’t look comfortable either.

This was a great back and forth fight, that ended with Huerta trying to score with RNC but Evans defense was stopping any possible submission. Huerta landed about 16 or 17 unprotected/unanswered punches to Evans’ head and Mazagatti stopped the fight and gave Huerta the TKO win 3 and a half minutes in the second.

Joe Lauzon Vs. Brandon Melendez

Joe Lauzon last fought Jens Pulver and KO’d him after 48 seconds in the first round and now, bizarrely enough, he’s on the undercard for his fight versus BJ Penn. Melendez took to the fight to Lauzon and he was pushing the fight and Lauzon was always on the back foot.

Lauzon got some slamming takedowns and managed to manoeuvre into full mount. Melendez kicked and humped out of the full mount which resulted in him moving himself into position for Lauzon to get an RNC. Melendez broke free and stood the fight up only for Lauzon to take him down to the mat again. Lauzon tried submission after submission which Melendez survived until Joe Lauzon caught him in a triangle from his guard leaving Melendez only one option which was to tap. 2 minutes and nine seconds into the second round and Lauzon gets the win by submission.

Matt Wiman Vs. Brian Geraghty

Wiman pounded on Geraghty’s head resulting in a referee stoppage. TKO win, 2 minutes and 9 seconds in the round.

Leonard Garcia Vs. Alan Berube

Garcia almost lost it twice by way for Berube’s hard applied chokes but he took Berube’s back and locked in with RNC leaving Berube to either tap or choke out at with just under 40 seconds left in the first round.

Cole Miller Vs. Andy Wang

Cole Miller KO’d Andy Wang with a head kick and just to make sure, as he fell to the mat, he pounced on him and landed a billion unanswered punches to get the TKO and the stoppage after a minute and 10 seconds in the first.

Gray Maynard Vs. Rob Emerson

The guy that Diaz fought before reaching the final was Gray Maynard. Maynard was heavily tipped to win in that fight but after a good solid beating Diaz still managed to submit him and take a place in the finale. Maynard was fighting Rob Emerson and this was by far more bizarre that the Gamburyan/Diaz final. It culminated in the beastly strong Maynard slamming Emerson to the mat and knocking himself out in the process only for Emerson to have tapped out due to rib injury. Steve Mazagatti’s decision was a win for the unconscious Maynard, meanwhile the Nevada State Athletic Commission had other ideas and ruled the fight a No Contest. Crazy, Maynard will probably appeal it.
