UFC70 Cro Cop vs Gabriel Gonzaga

CHECK THE UF70 RESULTS.

Howdy UFC Fans, Dan here from UFC-Fights.com just checking in an article about my thoughts of Crop Cop’s fight against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC70.

I just had a few thoughts on the last match Cro Cop had against Eddie Sanchez at UFC67. For me it was a highly anticipated fight because Crop Cop was one of my favorite fighters in PRIDE and it was certainly a great signing for us to get him into the UFC!

I watched Cro Cop stalk Eddie Sanchez and you could tell he was eyeing him up for a big punch or kick. There was one kick that almost connected like a mawashi geri jodan (my roots are karate so meh) that’s a roundhouse kick to the head to us regular joes. That’s one of Cro Cop’s biggest weapons and to quote what he said about his fight against Eddie Sanchez:

“Left leg to the hospital, right leg to the cemetary”

Man, that’s brutal! I honestly got the feeling that he was going to KILL Eddie Sanchez. I felt bad for Eddie, he had 6 fights under his belt versus Cro Cops 21 wins at the time. That was reeking of inexperience and that’s why I wsa thinking that this fight was goign to produce either a big frikking upset or as predicted a knockout or TKO win for Cro Cop. 4 and a half minutes into the first round and we got our TKO.

Now think of Gabriel Gonzaga…

7 wins and 1 loss (incidentally to Fabricio Werdum on the same UFC70 Fight Card). He’s had two previous fights in the Octagon so he’s not completely new to the UFC. This could be a big factor in this matchup, also the fact that he’s tagged as being a submission master and looking at his short record he has a few KO/TKO stoppages in there also. He seems well rounded.

Cro Cop knocking out Aleksander EmelianenkoCro Cop’s strengths are all on one side, left punches, big left kick - ask Wanderlei or Aleksander Emelianenko ;) I am just worried that he might get taken down and subbed, simple as! Experience is on his side, he’s had a decision loss against Mark Hunt (forget that), Big Nog, Kevin Randleman and Fedor Emelianenko (when’s he coming to the UFC?!?!?!?!). Three quality opponents he’s lost against.

Final thing before I get my ass out for breakfast… Cro Cop didn’t get to fight Big Nog (who’s now in the UFC) again nor did he get to fight Fedor again (so maybe Dana & co should sign him!).

I would just like to say, you know, that I am in talks with Bodog. Now that Ufc owns Pride, I don’t, you know, want to work for Dana White. I will update you all again soon.

    Jerry

Pfffft, Bodog. What’s left for those guys?! Everyones going to the UFC and PRIDE. Bodog’s finished before it started!

Drži se Mirko svi smo uz tebe!

I don’t know what that means but it looks like you’re Cesky!

Well it is early to say that Cro cop is done, there is gotta be a rematch and then we’ll see who is who?

  9. 9 Russ

I would like to see a rematch! It’s interesting, I think Cro Cop’s one of the biggest names in UFC as in probably highest paid and brought in to be a superstar. This all reminds me of the Georges St. Pierre loss to Matt Serra - shit happens!

  10. 10 sad

i agree ,, shit happens and this is one ofe those once on a lifetime mestakes.. . Im Croat and love Cro Cop to deth but that was outmatch… i sure hope hes knee is not broken or anything…. if it was that would be the end of Mirko

  11. 11 Dissapointed

I agree. Shit does happen. Look at his loss to Randleman, he came back with a vengeance. I agree with “sad” about his knee, and his ankle; I hope they’re not broken or damaged in anyway. For some reason when people come from Pide to UFC they lose their edge. IDK why, it just seems to happen. I hope Crocop comes back stronger than ever and KO’s Gonzaga. I also hope he gets to fight Lidell and KO’s his ass too. I wish Dana White would stop being a bitch and bring Fedor to UFC. He would dominate both UFC and Pride.

  12. 12 Wreckon

Wow. That was sad. True, Shit happens, but Gonzaga looked good. Mirko’s ankle however, did not look good. I was relieved to see Cro Cop walk out of the octagon. Did not think that was going to happen. I’m starting to question if Pride is really that much better than UFC as so many people claim…

  13. 13 Russ

@Disappointed: Fedor in the UFC would rock! When Cro Cop goes back to join the special forces in Croatia after his parliament duties are over, will he be done with fighting?

@Wreckon: PRIDE is a great organization so is UFC. The arena they fight in are completey different. The fighters are bound by different rules, no soccer kicks in UFC, no elbows in PRIDE. Meh, we could argue for ever about it!

  14. 14 Russ

I hope his knee and ankle are ok, that was a horrible fall. I can’t seem to get any info on it.

  15. 15 Gangula

  16. 16 Russ

    Makes sense to me Gangula!?

  17. 17 Redemption

Kevin Randleman knocked out Mirko Cro Cop in the first round of the Total Elimination of 2004 in April(this month). He came right back eight months later that same year and wooped Randlemans ass then sumitted him. Its enividable that Cro cop will fight Gonzaga again and put him in a submission. He use Gonzagas own decipline against him like Gonzaga did against Mirko Cro Cop!!

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic’s UFC 70 Injuries Limited to Ligament Damage
Posted by UFC Junkie on April 23, 2007 at 4:24 pm ET
UFC heavyweight Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic sustained no substantial damage during his brutal knockout loss to Gabriel Gonzaga at Saturday’s UFC 70 event, according to various reports.

Filipovic, a former PRIDE Fighting Championships fighter and champion, was acquired by the UFC earlier this year and posted a successful TKO victory over Eddie Sanchez in his debut at UFC 67 in February. He entered Saturday’s event, which took place at Manchester, England, as a large favorite over Gonzaga but lasted less than one round with the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt fighter.

After suffering nearly three minutes of ground and pound, and absorbing a major cut along his hairline, Filipovic was tagged with a sickening high leg kick in the round’s final seconds. The blow instantly knocked him unconscious. As he fell to the canvas, the Croatian’s right leg got caught underneath him, and his knee, ankle and foot were bent backward in a horrifyingly unnatural position as he lay motionless in the Octagon.

Not until referee Herb Dean stopped the fight and removed Gonzaga from the vicinity was Filipovic’s leg untucked from under him.

Despite the apparent carnage, Filipovic stated to foreign reporters that he only suffered some ligament damage to his right foot.

With all things considered, the report was a surprising — and comforting — bit of news.

Yupp, I already stated that there was minor ligament damage… See this article for more information.

The Brazilians são the I improved of the world , do not have for nobody

  21. 21 Steve

People worried about mirko’s ankle-knee twist… He didn’t suffer a injury, he is just naturally flexable… HENCE THE REASON HE WAS STANDING TALKING TO JOE ROGAN ABOUT THE LOSS…
on another note… Joe Rogan saying “So whats next mirko?” makes me mad… he lost it was A FLUKE… just cause he lost once is he gonna quit? NO, Rogan is a freakin retard and needs to go back to fear factor cause he sucks as a commentator!

  22. 22 Russ

    Hey Steve, read this.

  23. 23 Jim

I hope this fight will shut-up some of the people that constantly rant about how much better Pride fighters are than UFC fighters. Mirko got dominated. At no point was he winning that fight. So, don’t call it a fluke.

  24. 24 Russ

He’s never been mounted and taken elbows like that before. When he got up his guard was down and Gabe rocked him with a big roundhouse to the head.

Lack of training from Mirko in this instance. He clearly doesn’t have enough experience of UFC fighting in a cage and with those rules.

  25. 25 daniel

  26. 26 bruce lee

Crocop think that they have been betrayed his thinking time out because he thought that gonzaga not able to target due to the increase in weight, you know that the person Butterball can not lift his leg was happening

  27. 27 san da fighter

I was at the event and i got a the feeling from cro cop he was just too relaxed, you could tell he was waiting for the right moment to pounce but took to many shots before he could. He gave no respect to his opponents stand up, which is why he got KOed. I can assure you cro cop will not be making this mistake again, he will come back a better fighter, i feel very sorry for his next opponent. This is a lesson for us all. You can have the skill but your WILL must be greater than your skill.

  28. 28 bruce lee

Crocop Yes, I would personally know the dust stubborn man not surrender easily, but losing to Gonzaga is the reality in much the same when I saw it was out of the cage is very Mthater

Definitely not a FLUKE… CroCop underestimated Gonzaga, his will and spirit to fight where not nearly at the same level as Gonzaga’s who is all about making his name. Also, crocop does not do well against the ground and pound fighters, and Gonzaga is a champ in that. Also, the UFC rule that elbows are allowed where in Pride they’re not was a new thing for crocop.
Crocop will either come out a better fighter or he’ll hang his gloves…

  32. 32 Russ

Cro Cop’s next fight is supposed to be at UFC75 in England.

  33. 33 ufc fan

this just feeds to the fact that its a fight and anything can happen

  34. 34 Russ

A fights a fight. Anything can and always does happen, define “anything”. Philosophy is bullshit, let’s get it on Cro Cop!

  35. 35 Gabriel Gonzaga

You’re DAMN RIGHT about Fedor E. He would rule the UFC. I’d like to see him punish Tito Ortiz one time. CMON FEDOR WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON? The UFC is YOURS MAN! (somebody translate that for him if they get the chance..LOL!)

I think Matt Hughes is a much better fighter than St. Pierre and he is going to prove it this time. Pierre got a lucky strike the last time, and Matt Huges will also kick the living shit out of Matt Serra. I can’t WAIT to see those two tangle again.

Fedor takes them all, but watch out! Gabriel Gonzaga is going to be a dominant fighter in MMA and I believe he will be number one. Him against Fedor will be a good fight to watch….watch him rise to the top until Fedor comes in… if he ever does.

  45. 45 Mike

Also, I am a Randy Coture fan, but I think he will lose to Gabriel Gonzaga. I will be shocked if he beats Gabriel, but we’ll see. Gabriel better not get too cocky. Coture is not new to MMA and has a full tool box to work with, as well as Gonzaga. It will be a good fight but I think it’ll be over in the first round.
